SUP Photo Shoot

by Arnd 12. August 2009 23:29

SUP stands for Stand Up Paddling, a new way to combine the benefits of paddling and surfing. Long time before board surfing was invented, fishermen in Hawaii and Peru used big boards out of wood or straw to stand on and using long paddles to get out to fish and surf back to shore. A few years ago it got rediscovered by Big Wave Legend Laird Hamilton and his mates on Maui and now it is taking the world by storm.

The beauty of SUP, there is no need to live on the coast to do stand up paddling. Anywhere where there is open water you can can SUP and enjoy nature plus having a great work out in the same time.

Long time friend and photographer Flo Hagena from Munich contacted me to come along to a photo shoot for Imagine Stand Up Surfboards on the Eibsee close to Garmisch Partenkirchen in the German Alps. The lake is located on the base of the Zugspitze, Germanys highest mountain. A very popular tourist attraction with its crystal clear water nestled in a beautiful alpine landscape.

Early in the morning we all met at my friend Carsten, the importer of Imagine Surfboards, to load all the toys and photo equipment into my lovely Teva Van. The idea was to leave the smallest possible carbon footprint and therefore we decided to pile up in one car. Ines, the 2 photo Flo’s, Carsten, Marko and myself managed to arrive at the lake early enough before all the tourists would show up and “polluting” the background with millions of pedal boats.

We took advantage of the blueberry day and spend 8 hours shooting and paddling all across the lake having a blast. What a great day !
