The 2009 Lyons Outdoor Games took place over the weekend with the best water levels in the events history. High water in the South Saint Vrain made for an awesome creek race and for one of the better play spots on the Colorado tour.
 
Lyons Outdoor Games is kind of like a miniature Teva Mountain Games, it has a similar roster of events and sports but there are generally fewer competitors. By no means does this mean that the event is any less challenging or quality though. The South Saint Vrain Creek Race is with out a doubt one of my favourite races. It’s fairly long, has lots of great moves and is super continuous making for an ideal race site. Most of the races in Colorado go through the mank and South Saint Vrain is no exception but the lines seem to go better than others like Homestake. My first race run was well, aweful, probably the worst run that I had the entire time. I didn’t paddle as hard on my second run but had way better lines and managed to pull things together for a much faster time. Sorry no pics of the creek.
 
Next up was the freestyle. The Lyons hole is one of my nemesis’, the last few years it hasn’t treated me so well but this year I had better luck. The extra water made it way better allowing for most of the new hole moves and even some old school ends for Pat Keller in an RPM. There really is no school like the old school and even though Pat didn’t compete he managed to turn some heads with big ol’ ends and even a few Tricky Whu’s in one of the original playboats.
