Casper van Kalmthout final report from Canada

by Arnd 24. August 2009 06:17

Casper is on his way for the Worlds in Thun, here his final report from the recent trip to Canada.

For worlds training I spent 5 weeks in Canada last month. Canada no doubt will be the best place to spend your summer if you’re intending to train on wave moves. Ottawa river is usually chosen as a home base by most paddlers. Especially this year, the raft bases at Ottawa were filled with international athletes for their preparation for the World Championships.

©gerd serasoles  As Thun (World Championships wave), is quite a small and technical wave, the Ottawa was probably the best location to train. With ‘corner wave’, ‘little baby face’ and ‘Big Smoothie’ on the same run, that all appear to have some similarities to Thun. The problem about Canada actually is, that it has got too much to offer, so it easily seduces a flatlander to diverge from his trainings schedule to enjoy the bigger waves around. More...

Teva Toga Party

by Arnd 12. August 2009 00:01

Teva Tribe member Casper van Kalmthout reports from Canada:

Lakeside is a notorious pub in Portage-du-Fort on the Quebecian side of the Ottawa. Once in a while the raft guides from all companies around the Ottawa, gather in this place to throw an intense party.

We were lucky enough to experience this legendary party during our stay in Canada, last weekend. We’re not only luckily to be able to experience such a party, but also this time Teva seemed to be the main sponsor of the whole happening.  The Theme: Teva Toga.

We paused our training tour for a little bit and focused on a huge bender. Teva athletes Rush Sturges, Antony Yap and Tanya Faux were around, which made the brand being very strongly represented on the athlete side.

Here’s one shot to give a little expression of the crew…

Canadian Golf Tour Part 1: High Tension by Casper van Kalmthout

Team Teva Member Casper van Kalmthout is enjoying his trip in Canada as part of his preparation for this years Kayak Freestyle World Championships. Here his first update:

Canadian Golf Tour Part 1: High Tension

Well, me and Tim Uneken made it to Canada. It has been an adventure by getting on the plane on a last call and surviving the usual struggle at the US border...

Since we arrived we hired a beautiful little ‘economic’ car and got on the road randomly searching for some kayaking.
After one visit to the ‘Wal*Mart’ we decided to dedicate this trip as our Canadian golf tour. For those who don’t understand this title, look for the Dutch word ‘golf’ on translate.google.com and you’ll understand.

Anyways, we bought ourselves a golf club and a bunch of balls and now we’re randomly touring around to thrive some balls into the wild!
Luckily our lovely French friends Mathieu Coldebella, Clito and Franswaffel (look for swaffel on translate.google.com too
) picked us up with the idea to spend a couple of days at ‘High Tension’ on the Gatineau river. It’s a beautiful place, a beautiful river and a beautiful surrounding to play golf. Damn, amazing, our first 3 days in Canada… As the Dutch saying speaks: we felt with our nose into the butter.

Getting to the golf course was quite adventurous. As we decided to live there for a few days we ran down with 20 kg on food, 4 full bags on sleeping gear and a few beers… As we only brought 4 golf balls down to High Tension, we ran out of them pretty quickly. Same happened to the beers. For this reason we decided to kayak for the rest of the time. And it was sick! We are 6 days ahead now and we spent 5 days surfing that wave. The shape and weight of the Project 54 Cx is sick. Carbon is the future for kayaking for sure…

So after 6 days Canada we are happy and tired and on our way back to Ottawa into the civilization again… Luckily we got to get some extra golfing before we left! Check the pics.
